BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure bikes are recalled due to manufacturing defect | Front Fork Tube defect

BMW Motorrad India is inspecting for a fault in the front forks of R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure models sold in the Indian market. BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure bikes are recalled due to manufacturing defect which could affect about 200,000 units worldwide. These bikes were manufactured during the period of November 2013 and June 2017.

They started it as a global “service campaign” for the affected bikes, but now they made a massive global recall for BMW Motorrad’s most popular motorcycle model. Now BMW Motorrad India dealers are voluntarily checking BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure models for the same issue.

Reason to Recall:

The stanchion between the front forks and the triple clamps are defective of the bikes. This problem may cause the front fork to come off and even get separated from the yoke resulting in front end failure. Which results in the accident while the motorbike is being ridden off-road or over an obstacle or into deep potholes at varying speeds.

Both models are inspected for excessive gap between the fork pipe and the seal plug. The top of each fork tube is a pressed on top cap. This top cap can create a gap under high stress. This gap could increase after repeated stress which could lead to fork failure. If the gap exceeds the acceptable limit of 1-2 mm,which cannot be repaired. So BMW Motorrad is replacing the affected part at free of cost.

BMW Motorrad says that there is no issues reported on normal road use. However, there have been reports of damage noted to these parts on off-road rides where there have been high impact shocks to the front fork. So far, very few customers in India have faced problems with the issue. The total number of bikes is estimated to be over 1,50,000 globally are affected, so company made a massive recall.

Latest reports indicate that BMW Motorrad has issued a ‘stop sale’ on the R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure models in the US due to the this issue.
